How I Coach

I coach differently from other coaches. Here’s a simplified version of what most of them do: They ask where you want to be in your life and what you want to accomplish. Then they ask you where you’re stuck and what’s been holding you back. Next, they tell you what to do to overcome those obstacles, and give you some assignments to be completed by your next session.

That’s not how I coach.

Because I work with people in emotional pain (I was drawn to work with those people early in my coaching career), I use a completely different approach.

I create the space for you to share your pain, and I listen with my ears and heart to understand at a deep level both you and your emotional pain, and what living with that pain is like.

Then I use all the knowledge and skills, which include those I’ve learned in my own life, those I’ve learned from coaching and other related classes and courses, and those I’ve learned from coaching people around the world for over twenty years, to coach and support you in finding the place inside yourself (which each of us has) where you are emotionally well—very possibly more so than you can even imagine.

That process involves both sharing my insights with you and figuratively holding up a mirror so you can start to see that place for yourself. And I also give you some activities and behaviors for you to use to help integrate your insights and what you learn into your life.

My coaching is not a quick fix that makes the emotional pain you’ve been living and struggling with go away in one session. But you get value from the beginning, and will soon see a very noticeable difference: a lessening of that pain and more enjoyment in your life.

Here’s what one had to say about the coaching she received (she sought me out because of her struggle and emotional pain from having and living with multiple sclerosis):

My coaching sessions with Thomas over the last several weeks have brought me a level of peace, understanding and acceptance about living with a chronic illness that I never envisioned was possible. ... You do the hard work, gently and compassionately guided by Thomas, and before you know it you have opened yourself up to see beyond your condition to all that you still have to offer. For the first time in a very long time, I look forward to each day with joyful expectations. Thank you Thomas for holding up the mirror for me to see me in all my fullness.
